Become Involved in Your Own Health Care!

Pain is the primary reason people seek medical treatment in the United States. The majority of this pain occurs in the musculoskeletal system. It would seem essential that medical professionals have in depth knowledge of this subject.  If not, your doctor might fall back on old standards of care for chronic muscle and joint pain, such as anti inflammatory meds, possible antidepressants, and sleep medications. None of those “cures” get to the underlying cause of pain, and all have toxic side effects. Did you know that anti-inflammatory drugs inhibit the healing and tissue regeneration process? Nonsteroidal ani-inflammatory drugs, the number one prescribed drug for chronic pain, can cause tremendous damage to tissues. Why not try myofascial release, or trigger point therapy?

In 1998, a study was completed to assess the competency of recent medical school graduates in musculoskeletal medicine. 82% of the recent graduates failed the exam. The study went on to report that the average time spent in medical education in orthopedics was 2 weeks. One third of all medical school graduates had no orthopedic education. Because the results of the study were so shocking, it was repeated in 2002. A passing score was set at 70%. 78% of recent medical graduates failed to demonstrate basic competency in musculoskeletal medicine.

Needless to say, it may be very difficult to find help for your lower back pain, muscle pain, or joint pain. I am not a doctor, but I have found many ways in my studies and experiments (on myself, friends, and animals) to relieve pain using nutrition, supplements, low level laser therapy, myofascial release,  and sports massage. Not only can pain be eliminated, but wellness and disease prevention can all be achieved with safe lifestyle changes.

An Important Supplement: Astragalus

This is an edited excerpt from a book I’ve been reading called The Wild Medicine Solution: Healing with Aromatic, Bitter, and Tonic Plants, by Guido Mase.

“The science behind Astragalus is remarkable. Modern research is validating the uses detailed for this plant. Studies link it to improved immunity and reduced anemia when it comes to chronic infection, cancer, kidney disease, and more. It is a tonic that builds our resistance to all manner of ills, including  pathogens. Recovery from protracted illness or long term stress is another of its strengths. I have found this plant to be useful support for those undergoing difficult courses of chemotherapy.

Those who take plants like Echinacea in the fall should switch to Astragalus instead. It’s a much more appropriate immune tonic and much more effective at keeping illness at bay. While its life-giving power is legendary in conditions of extreme depletion, such as cancer, compromised immunity, or recovery from prolonged infection, everyone would do well to take some Astragalus root every day. For those who get frequent colds, or whose respiratory tracts seem to be congested and weak all winter, this herb is just the ticket. Astragalus will improve overall immunity.

Transfer Factor and Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis is a disease where the immune system attacks healthy tissue. One for hopeful treatment is with Transfer Factor. I have written often on this blog about my profound gratitude to the 4life company that is the source for Transfer Factor, which restored my body to equilibrium and allowed me to breathe without toxic drugs and inhalers.

TF was used in an experiment with 50 female patients with RA.  The patients were followed for 24 months, with check ups every three months. Of the 50 patients, 30% did not respond to the therapy. Excellent and very good results were obtained in the other 70%. The study confirmed the fact that specific immunotherapy with Transfer Factor represents an important adjuvant in the treatment of Rheumatoid Arthritis.

Here is a testimonial from a physician :

I have had quite severe Rheumatoid Arthritis for nearly ten months now. My Rheumatic Factor was exceptionally high and I was very sick with it.

The bones around the joints; particularly the metacarpophalangeal joints; have become enlarged and deformed. They are also very fragile and I have had a spontaneous fracture-dislocation of one of my finger joints already. It seemed that a wheelchair was in my near future.

However; since taking an increasing dose of advanced generation transfer factors; I am now walking with a normal gait instead of painfully and slowly waddling about.

Getting in and out of cars is no longer a major task; I can turn taps on and off and today I even; admittedly rather gingerly; kicked a soccer ball along the length of a park with my grandson.

If you had asked me a week ago whether I could ever do any of these things again I would have thought that you were either very ignorant or a bit cruel to tease me with these unattainable delights.

Apart from this I feel a lot more “switched on” and people have been telling me how well I look.

Thank you once again and God bless you for having done me so much good.

Negative Side Effects of Steroids

Corticosteroids can be life saving. That was the case with me and severe asthma. Steroids are anti-inflammatory; they decrease pain, swelling, and relieve itching. The problem is that what should have been a very short term treatment turned into 14 years, until I was introduced to Transfer Factor which I have often written about on this blog.  When treating our dogs, horses, cats, and ourselves, it is imperative to be informed.

The negative side effects of corticosteroids are the reason they should be used as briefly, and in as low doses as possible. They decrease the ability of wounds to heal. They increase the chance of infection. They can contribute to destruction of joints by decreasing collagen. They suppress the immune system.  They increase appetite and thirst. In cats, an increase in diabetes has been seen.  Steroid use can also upset laboratory tests, causing misdiagnosis of other problems.

A holistic approach to replacing toxic steroids will include nutrition, omega fatty acids, antioxidants, Vitamins such as C, A, E, glucosamine, MSM, yucca, bromelain, and so many more. These approaches are safe and non-toxic.  You will save money on drugs and vet bills.

Natural Approaches to Arthritis

Lameness is a common symptom of arthritis in older animals. Many veterinarians prescribe corticosteroids, or other potentially toxic medications, but there are more natural and safe options. Conventional therapies treat pain and inflammation, but rarely help the stiff and swollen joint to heal .

Each animal is an individual and a dedicated owner may have to try several treatment options before the magic cocktail is found.  The goal is not just to suppress symptoms, but to actually heal the body in a holistic way.

I have discussed acupuncture, cold laser therapy, massage,Transfer Factor (wonderful for the inflammation of arthritis) and other homeopathic and herbal remedies on this blog. Many natural remedies can relieve pain and supply nutrients to help cartilage heal.

Arthritis results from erosion of the cartilage lining of the joints. Since there are no nerves in this cartilage, a great amount of damage can occur before the surrounding joint tissues become inflamed and painful. So once again, prevention is the key. The earlier diagnosis is made, the greater the chance for healing.

Glucosamine, chondroitin, hyaluronic acid, enzymes, fatty acids, can all help heal cartilage.

The Danger of Antibiotic Use

About 70% of antibiotics sold in the U.S. go to farm animals, according to the Pew Charitable Trusts. “These farms are loaded with resistant bacteria, which then spread into the community”, says Dr. Stuart Levy of Tufts University.

You can get resistant bacteria from the meat or the produce you eat, sine manure from these animals is applied to crops. Runoff from farms can spread the bacteria into the environment, which means plants and animals can carry them and pass them on to humans.

In late 2013 the FDA took action to phase out routine use of antibiotics to promote growth in animals. Regulators called on the industry to voluntarily use antibiotics only for therapeutic purposes under the supervision of a veterinarian.

A number of restaurant chains have agreed to stop serving meat from animals raised with antibiotics. In Denmark, a ban on antibiotic use has led to fewer resistant bugs in animals. Dr. Levy says “Europeans have shown we can raise animals without antibiotic food supplements”.

A Vicious Cycle

Muscle pain can be caused by tension, poor posture, a fall or other trauma, or even from stress. Some people assume that increasing muscular stiffness is due to aging, but it can also be due to a steady increase in muscle tension. After a while the body gets used to the tension.

Without realizing it, the body recruits other muscles to help compensate for the stiff areas. These other muscles were not meant for the job they are recruited for, so they become fatigued, which causes further pain. The increase in pain causes the original stiff muscles to contract even more. What can be done to reverse this cycle of tension, pain, and dysfunction??

A skilled body worker can help stimulate the body’s natural healing system.  It is my job to evaluate and treat an individual’s structure. It is essential that nutrition, massage, diet, acupressure, exercise, and education all are utilized to help restore balance and harmony in the body and maintain well-being throughout life.

Say Good-Bye to Illness

I’m reading a book called Say Good-Bye to Illness by Dr. Devi Nambudripad. It is packed with information to help people take control of their health, get off toxic medications, and eliminate many common medical problems. Dr. Nambudripad is known for her allergy elimination techniques, also referred to as NAET. She has devised a drug free, natural solutions to eliminate all allergies, including those so severe they cause anaphylactic reactions.

Here are some of the natural cures she recommends:

Coriander strengthens the nervous system, glandular system, and sinuses

Lemon rind and rice strengthen the lungs

Pepper strengthens the heart and circulatory system

Ginger root strengthens the stomach

Brown sugar strengthens the spleen

Dandelion leaves strengthen the liver

Coconut oil strengthens the gall bladder

Turmeric and cumin have antibacterial properties and can help clean the small intestine

Rock salt rejuvenates the kidneys

Lemon leaves strengthen the bladder

Pomegranate strengthens the large intestine

Garlic is a natural antibacterial, antiparasitic, and antioxidant.

This is a very small selection from the book and I recommend reading one of her books yourself. I will continue to share little gems as I come across them.

Say Good Bye to Illness

Lately I have been reading about a controversial treatment for many illnesses developed by Dr. Devi Nambudripad. Her technique is called NAET: a non-invasive, drug free, natural solution to alleviate allergies of all types and intensities using a blend of selective energy balancing, testing and treatment procedures from acupuncture/acupressure, allopathy, chiropractic, nutritional, and kinesiological disciplines of medicine.

Until recently, we looked at disease as sets of symptoms caused by poor function or non-function of specific organs or body parts. Medical professionals everywhere are taught to look for and to treat symptoms, rather than to look further to find their causes.

Certain patterns that have been observed by medical practitioners using Dr. Nambudripad’s techniques are:

Patients suffering from arthritis show allergies to table salt, corn, beans, pepper, nutmeg, and other spices.

People with depression should be checked for allergies to B vitamins, sugar, and trace minerals.

A woman with hypertension was cured when it was traced back to an allergy to nylon.

Eczema disappeared when the patient was treated for an allergy to plastic.

I am going to keep reading and will post here when I find important information. Let me know if you have any experience with NAET!

Can You Avoid Feeding Your Horse GMOs?

For Christmas my daughter (she knows me well!) gave me a Non Gmo Cookbook (who knew that existed??). Looking at the categories in the beginning of the book renewed my concern for the health of our horses. In the high risk crop category is alfalfa, canola (90% of US crop), corn (88%), and sugar beets (95%). This category includes crops that are in commercial production in genetically engineered form.

I won’t get into the debate on whether GMO crops are safe to eat, since there are loud arguments on both sides. More than 60 countries have banned the production and sale of GMOs. Australia, Japan, and all of the European Union have banned them.

In the near future it may be impossible to buy hay or beet pulp that is not genetically engineered.

This is a link to animal feeds that do not contain GMO:

Here is a list of dog foods that do not contain GMOs.  Please let me know if you have more information and I will publish it.
