Muscle tension can affect balance, cause poor movement, alter blood chemistry by restricting breathing, and cause stress to joints. Any time an athlete feels limited in their movement, sports massage is indicated.
Some of the goals of sports massage are to release spasms that restrict range of motion, and to relieve pain. Treating trigger points is crucial to relieving the pain athletes suffer. I use a combination of myofascial release, stress point, trigger point, and other massage techniques. What ever is needed and whatever restores a muscle’s full function are valid in sports massage.
After treatment, you will often see a horse drink a good amount of water. This tells me toxins have been released, and the horse senses fluid needs to be returned to newly spread muscle fibers.
